New Delhi, March 20: The first meeting between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel was awkward, to say the least. On the top of it, Trump acting deaf to the handshake requests of Merkel became the highlight.
In the video published by Business Insider, media persons are repeatedly asking for a handshake between the two. While Angela heard the request and said the same to Trump, he didn't react at all.
Meanwhile, Trump's spokesman Sean Spicer refutes the reports of his ignorance by saying "I don’t believe he heard the request".
However, Germans are not satisfied with the clarification and pointed out that throughout the meeting, Mr Trump did not once look Ms Merkel in the eye.
In addition, a handshake at such meetings is much like a scripted protocol and Trump not initiating it becomes another question.
Recalling his earlier meetings with global leaders, it looks like Trump has a habit of making handshakes awkward.
While him offering handshake with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became a meme of the month, the one with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe became the laughter dose.
His handshake with Abe lasted for 19 apparently painful seconds for the Japanese leader.
