New Delhi, January 10: Indian Olympic Association has finally apologised for nominating tainted Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala as Its Life Member. The IOA President has clarified to Sports Ministry that the manner in which the two scamsters was nominated Life member was unconstitutional and had caused considerable embarrassment to the country.
The revoke came after the decision received severe criticism from several ministers including Sports Minister Vijay Goel as well as from the public in general. The sports ministry had suspended IOA for the decision as well.
The ministry had given a stern warning to IOA saying its suspension will continue till the decision is revoked.
In fact, newly-appointed International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Narinder Batra also resigned as the Olympic body's associate vice-president in protest.
The appointment was declared "null and void" in order to get the recognition of the Sports Ministry and also to avoid any possible action from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The duo was appointed for the position on December 27 even when the decision was opposed by several IOA members.
"Both Kalmadi and Chautala's appointments have been declared null and void as after going through all the documents of the AGM we found out that there was a technical fault in the decision," a top IOA official told PTI.
The official side Kalmadi and Chautala are no longer part of IOA and have nothing to do with the organisation.
The protest against the duo came because of corruption charges levelled on them.
Kalmadi is an accused in the 2010 Commonwealth Games corruption scam and has spent nine months in jail as well.
Chautala is facing a trial in disproportionate assets case.
On a related note, Kalmadi had himself backed off from accepting the post until he gets a clean chit from the court while a defiant Chautala remained stick to his position until ordered by IOC.
