New Delhi, April 20: Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad accused Samajwadi Party leader and former Akhilesh government minister Azam Khan for plotting a 400 crore scam of some Wakf Board land. In response, Azam Khan had said that Kalbe Jawad had come to him to make his son-in-law to be the chairman of the Shia Wakf Board. Such allegations are quite usual for leaders, but it seems weighty that the game of manipulation of millions of Wakf Board is always running.
As per current scenario, there are more than 30 Wakf boards in the country. According to the data of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, there are more than four lakh registered assets of the Wakf Boards in 6 lakh acres of land. There are approximately 3,000 properties under the Delhi Wakf Board, most of these have also been leased to private entities. This rent leads to the high-earning of Wakf, which should be used for the needs of poor people.
The biggest proof of manipulation in the Wakf Board came out in the year 2011 through the Justice Shashwat Kumar Committee. In a committee report, it was said that the value of the total property of the Wakf in India is more than one lakh crores. It was also revealed in the report that income from this property is only Rs 163 crores, while it should actually be 12 thousand crores.
These figures raise two significant questions. First, how much difference is there in this income and second, are the people who have the command of the Wakf Board in their hands are turning it into their business? In the past also, it was revealed several times that the places which could be used for the betterment of the society were used to please small entities and individuals.
These properties were donated to make some influential people happy while it should have been given for the development of poor. According to many Muslim religion scholars, Wakf means giving donations of their movable or immovable property for religious or sacred work and such property should be used for the poor and needy.
In a recent report, it was revealed that there is a dispute over the property of Wakf. Many properties are those which have come up to the court's verdict. The illegal tenants living in them did not vacate them even after the court order.
