Chennai, March 18: In a shocking incident on Saturday, Renowned car racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife Niveditha were charred to death after their BMW car caught fire near Marina in Chennai.
The burning of the car was streamed live on Facebook which instantly went viral on social media. The people recording videos claimed they couldn't do much as the car had already caught fire. A person on the spot was recorded saying on FB live that they could go not near the car to help the passengers in the car because it caught fire and explosions continued.
As per reports, their BMW lost control, hit a tree and burst into flames in Pattinampakkam in Chennai. The two passengers could not get out of the car in time as they were unable to open the door.
The incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday at around 3:30 am. Both the victims died on the spot.
Police officials claimed that the racer's over speed driving was the reason behind the crash.
Fire and rescue services personnel from Mylapore also rushed to spot but it took around half-an-hour to put out the fire.
Adyar traffic investigation wing inspector of police Vanitha and her team broke open the car and recovered the bodies of the couple. The bodies were sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. The couple were identified with the help of the vehicle registration number.
As per police inquiries, the couple lived in Alapakkam near Porur and were returning from their friend's house at MRC Nagar in Raja Annamalaipuram.
While Ashwin was a professional racer, Nivedhitha was a doctor working at a private hospital in a Chennai. Ashwin was driving the car.
