New Delhi, April 21: More than 20 peoples were killed and several others were injured when a lorry crashed into Yerpedu market area near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
The speeding Tirupati-bound lorry first hit an electric pole and then rammed into the crowd. The truck was coming from Srikalahasti.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the lorry lost control of his vehicle on the highway after which the lorry hit an electric pole first and then rammed into a shop where people were standing, most of them farmers.
Some reports suggest that the driver was drunk.
While six people died in the collision, others lost their lives due to electrocution. The number of casualties could go up as several of the injured are critical.
Injured people have been rushed to the SVR Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati and the government hospital of Srikalahasti.
Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa has expressed shock over the incident.
"Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in AP's Chittoor district. Condolences to families of the deceased and prayers with the injured," Prime Minister Narendra Modi Office tweeted.
