New Delhi, April 20: A ‘shobha yatra’, a celebratory procession taken out by the Dalit community to mark B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary, was fired upon and attacked in Dudhali, a road adjacent to Saharanpur city on Thursday.
The police arrived at the spot and the other community got into a confrontation with the police. Due to this the police and the community members came face to face.
During the procession, over a dozen rounds of bullets were fired and people were attacked with stones. The ‘shobha yatra’ had to be stopped midway due to stone pelting and firing on the procession. Heavy police was deployed to restore calm in the area.
But soon the situtation got worst, firing was done on police officials, seeing the situation getting out of control, SSP and DM ran away from the spot to save their lives.
Media persons were also attacked, several got injured and vehicles were demolished including Commissioner car.
Community members are standing with sticks and stones to prevent the yatra from going forward.
Dalit activists allege that the attack is a part of a trend with an increased number of attacks on Dalits since the Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had come to power.
