New Delhi, April 4: With big faces like film stars Shahrukh Khan and Soha Ali, the markets of chit fund in billions of rupees in Bengal still remain unchanged. Even today, 19 big companies related to the Chit Fund business are flourishing in the government whose ties are connected with the TMC leaders.
If central agencies sharpen their investigations against these companies, then problem for Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee can increase even further.
According to the Confidential Report of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) of the Central Government, despite the court's sanction, till February 28, 2017, 24 chit fund companies were active in the country, most of which are in Bengal. Although the Supreme Court has taken strict action against the owner of Sahara and President of Sharda Group but still the chit fund companies are looting the poor's money in Bengal, Assam and Odisha. According to the report, the film producer and Mamata Banerjee's nearest Basudeb Bagchi is currently running 14 chit fund companies, 13 in Bengal and one in Odisha. All the companies of Bagchi are connected to Prayag Group. In 2002, Bagchi laid the foundations of Prayag Group in Kolkata with the money received from chit fund. Slowly, Bagchi mobilized billions of rupees from Chit Fund and today Bagchi has established Prayag Group in real estate, food processing, film production and food products.
After the arrest of some political leaders and Sharda Group owner Sudipta Sen, CBI investigation was done and during the probe in Chit fund scam, name of some other companies came into limelight. As soon as the information was received by PM office, SFIO was ordered to do the investigation.
It has been said in the report that when action was taken against the owner of Sharada and Rose Valley Group, the new center of black money was Prayag Group of Film Producer Bagchi.
Basudeb Bagchi, who has been holding a strong grip on Mamata Banerjee's party TMC and Bangla film industry, joined hands with Shah Rukh Khan and made him the brand ambassador of his Prayag group.
Basudeb, with blessings of Mamata Banerjee started a project to make a grand film on 2700 acres of land in West Midnapore, Bengal. The Ambassador of this project was Shahrukh Khan.
Bagchi also made several Bangla films from chit fund money, actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Jackie Shroff played lead role in them.
Market regulator SEBI and the Supreme Court has termed the chit fund as a fraud, but it is surprising that the black money making business is still running in Bengal. It is said that in Bengal and Odisha, the police and the Investigation Units have turned their eyes from chit fund business. One of the key reasons for this is the relation between owners of the chit fund company and the leaders of the ruling party.
However, once again the central government is trying to break the economic backbone of these big companies and it will definitely have a impact on Mamata's career.
