New Delhi, December 29: Documents reveal that a few members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) hand-in-glove with Kalmadi had silently planned the appointment of two tainted officials as life president which shocked the entire sports fraternity of the country.
The members of IOA present at its AGM were astounded when they came to know that Commonwealth Games scam accused Suresh Kalmadi and Haryana strongman Abhay Chautala were appointed life presidents of the prestigious IOA.
The document in the possession of India Samvad reveals that while circulating the agenda of AGM, the secretary general or the president did not say a word about appointing Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as life president of IOA.
Sources said that as a part of a well-conceived conspiracy, a group of IOA members owing allegiance to Kalmadi initiated the move. One of the members of IOA, on the condition of anonymity, told India Samvad that the AGM was over by 2 pm at the conference hall of Taj Coromandel in Chennai.
According to him, Kalmadi's old friend and joint secretary of IOA, Rakesh Gupta requested the President N Ramachandran to appoint Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as honorary life presidents of IOA. meanwhile, N Ramachandran took note of it while the entire AGM had already left the chairs.
Sources said that half of the members did not even get a chance to hear what Rakesh Gupta had said after the conclusion of the meeting. Subsequently, after the AGM was over, N Ramachandran addressed the press conference and while mentioning a number of decisions taken during the meeting, he revealed that Kalmadi and Chautala have been unanimously appointed as life presidents of IOA.
However, the fact is that at no point of time during the meeting, any such decision was taken and appointment of two tainted officers was not on the agenda circulated a month ago on November 24 to the members of IOA. A total of 12 issues were stated in the list but nothing about the decision on new life presidents of IOA.
Sources said that President of IOA, N Ramachandran, Secretary General, Rajeev Mehta and Joint Secretary Rakesh Gupta had planned this move in connivance and somehow managed to include it in the decision.
Kalmadi and Chautala were appointed the life presidents of IOA on Tuesday. Kalmadi's lawyer on Wednesday said that he has declined the offer saying 'the time in not appropriate.' Thereafter, Chautala, who first took a tough stand on the issue and said he will not give up the presidentship, on Thursday resigned from the post.
"I will be pleased to sacrifice my position, once again, in the best interest of Indian Sports, Sportspersons, Good Governance, Transparency and Cleanliness in India Sports," Chautala said in a statement today.
Kalmadi is an accused in the infamous 2010 CWG scam and his conduct came under the scrutiny of Central Vigilance Commission who then asked the CBI to investigate certain aspects of the games' organisation. In April 2011, CBI arrested former CWG Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi in the Timing-Scoring-Result case under sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
In the charge sheet filed by CBI against Kalmadi, it said, "Kalmadi is the main accused as he was the person with all supreme powers. He had the supreme overriding powers in the Organising Committee of the CWG, 2010." On 26 April 2011, he was sacked from the post of president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Abhay Chautala served as president of the IOA from December 2012 to February 2014 when it was suspended by International Olympic Committee following charges of corruption. He is also facing the charges in disproportionate assets case but remained the man running the IOA affairs from behind the scenes.
